Angelika Schnell is professor for architectural theory, architectural history and design at the platform History | Theory | Criticism (HTC). After studying theater studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and studying architecture at the Technical University of Berlin and the Technical University of Delft, she received her doctorate summa cum laude from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart on Aldo’s theoretical work Rossi. From 1993 to 2001 she was editor of the architecture theory magazine ARCH + , Berlin and taught architectural theory and architectural history at the Technical University of Berlin, the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart of the University of Groningen and the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck, before she was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2009.
She is a member of the editorial board of ARCH + , magazine for architectural theory and urban development, Berlin / Aachen, and of Candide , magazine for architectural knowledge, RWTH Aachen. Since 2015 she has also been co-editor of Bauwelt Fundamente.
Her research focuses on the theoretical relationship between architecture and the city in the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular on the phase of criticism of modernity, the design methods of architecture and their transdisciplinary networks, as well as methods of historical thinking in architecture.
