Fred Bernstein studied architecture at Princeton University and has written extensively about the subject. He has published several hundred articles in the New York Times, most of them on architecture or design, and hundreds more in other publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and such magazines as Architect, Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture, Architectural Digest, Blueprint and Metropolis. In 2008, he won the Oculus Award, bestowed by the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for distinction in architecture writing.
